The prayer of a mother - Part 1

A couple of years ago, I cried out to God to protect and rescue my son after he got lost in the woods (here's the story). God answered. And I am forever grateful.

My son has since grown. Now, we enjoyed deeper discussions. From his potential future jobs to the life of dinosaurs. From his favourite online game to the Ancient Greece civilisation.

Hearing him reflect and reason deepen my desire to see him become what God made him to be and for him to make the right choices in life.

In the current climate, this is not a given.

Having children and youth developing and sustaining a life of character is not a byproduct of wishful thinking—instead, it's the outcome of both intentional, Spirit-filled intercessory prayers and individual parental commitment and actions.

I firmly believe we, as mothers/guardians, have a crucial, two-fold role to play in our children's holistic growth. That is to make it a priority to intercede for them daily, for their protection, for godly wisdom, courage, moral compass, knowledge of the Truth, and to also model to them what growing in faith looks like so that our words match our actions.

Sounds like a tall order?!

Maybe. But we are not alone. We can trust the One who says, "Fear not, for I am with you. I will guide you." Knowing the crucial role mothers (and fathers play), let us take a moment to first recommend ourselves into God's hands before committing our children to His care. Let us be renewed and inspired by the Holy Spirit who empowers us to accomplish this fulfilling mission that God had given us.

A mother's prayer for personal recommitment. Would you consider praying with me?

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving me the privilege of being a mother/ guardian.

You have entrusted me with precious souls to prepare them for Your kingdom.

Lord, please forgive me for the times when I failed You in this mission – when I solely relied on my resources, knowledge, and external influences to bring them up in my terms instead of putting You first and anchoring them in Your Word.

Forgive me when I misrepresented You through my actions and words in front of my children. Forgive me also when I felt like giving up, losing the faith because I couldn't see the results of all my efforts, sacrifices and prayers, and I despaired to see my children staying or returning on the path of Truth.

Before I commit my children to Your love and care, I want to recommit myself today.

Create in me a new heart, a new thirst for You and of Your Word, so I can diligently teach my children, pointing them to your Fatherly love. Today, I resolve to place them in Your mighty hands and to rely entirely on Your wisdom to guide me and sustain me daily.

Children are indeed a heritage from You, Lord. Help me create the environment at home where they will also be taught by You, be inspired by Your Holy Spirit, and be nurtured by Your Word.

I will have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in Truth, in Your Truth, O Lord!

I know that you will complete this good motherhood work that You have started in me.

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for hearing and answering this prayer from your humble servant, in Jesus's name. Amen!

Bible Resources

The prayer above is based on Biblical verses:

Isaiah 54:13 (NKJV)

"All your children shall be taught by the Lord,

And great shall be the peace of your children."

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NKJV)

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)

"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,

The fruit of the womb is a reward."

3 John 4 (NKJV)

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
